Piirissaar – an island in the middle of a lake

Piirissaar is located between Lake Peipus and Lämmijärv and has an area of 7.5 km². Most of it is however wetlands with only 55 hectares in the north-eastern part of the island inhabitable for people. The island has three villages: Piiri, Tooni and Saare village. Tooni village is the centre of the local municipality. Most of the island’s inhabitants are Old Believers who have tried to maintain their unique culture and customs. Their main livelihood comes from fishing and onion farming. The island’s architectural landmarks are two churches.
